The State Board of Education defines dropout as a student who leaves school for any reason, other than death, prior to graduation or completion of a course of studies and without transferring to another school or institution.

Dropout data is reported for grade levels seven through twelve. Dropouts are counted in the grade for which they fail to enroll in the fall. For example, a student who drops out without completing the ninth grade and does not return after the summer is a ninth-grade dropout. A student who completes the ninth grade and is expected to enroll in the tenth grade but does not enroll after the summer ends is a tenth-grade dropout.

In 2010 the state certified number of dropouts was 255. The preliminary dropout count for the 2011 reporting year is 216. This is a preliminary drop of 39 which exceeds the goal of reducing the number of dropouts by 10% and establishes the base number for the 2012 goal.
